Northstar California Resort, Truckee

Staying at Northstar in Lake Tahoe

Northstar sits above Truckee on the north side of Lake Tahoe. It is a self-contained resort with its own village, and once you are there you can go a whole week without moving the car, which is the main reason families like it.

We own one condo here, on the Coyote Fork run, about a ten-minute walk above Northstar Village. We have been coming here for years and we look after it ourselves.

Who it suits

  • Families with children who ski or are learning
  • Groups of four to six who want a base rather than a hotel room
  • Anyone who would rather walk to dinner than drive to it
  • Summer visitors using North Lake Tahoe as a hiking and biking base

Why our place, specifically

  • On the Coyote Fork runSki to and from the building whenever the run is open, which in a normal season is most of the winter.
  • Ten minutes above the VillageRestaurants, shops, the gondola and the ice rink are a short walk downhill.
  • Two parking passesTwo passes for unassigned parking in the Ski Trails Condo lot beside the building.
  • Free resort shuttleIt stops nearby and runs on the resort's own seasonal schedule.

Across the year

What each season is actually like here, including the quiet ones.

Winter

The main season. The Coyote Fork run is open from the door for most of it, and the Village has restaurants, an ice rink and fire pits for the evenings. Northstar usually runs into mid-April, though the resort sets the closing date each year according to the snow.

Spring

Quieter and often the best value. Snow at the top can be excellent well into April while the base thins out, and the drive over from the west is far easier than in midwinter.

Summer

Hiking, mountain biking and the lake. Kings Beach and the north shore are about twenty minutes away, downtown Truckee about ten, and the resort runs its own summer programme. Evenings are cool at this elevation.

Autumn

The quietest time of year and, if you like walking, arguably the nicest. Everything is open in the Village at weekends and much less busy the rest of the week.

Hosts were extremely responsive and helpful. The location was great and exactly as advertised… ski in/ski out and about a 5-10 minute walk to the village. Space was clean and exactly what we were looking for. Thanks for a great stay!

Great location and good amenities. Super close to the village but far enough that you can’t hear it. Gondola was super close as well.

Questions about Northstar Tahoe

How far is Northstar from Reno airport?

About forty minutes in good conditions. Reno-Tahoe is the easiest airport for Northstar by some way. Sacramento is roughly two hours, and both drives can take considerably longer in a winter storm.

Do we need a car at Northstar?

Not really, once you are there. The Village is a ten-minute walk from the condo and the free resort shuttle covers the rest. You will want a car to get from the airport, and to visit Truckee or the north shore.

Is Northstar good for beginners?

It is one of the better mountains in Tahoe for learning, with a lot of gentle terrain and a well-regarded ski school. It is also a comfortable place to be if half your group skis and half does not.

What is there to do at Northstar in summer?

Hiking and mountain biking on the mountain, the lake about twenty minutes away at Kings Beach, and Truckee about ten minutes away for shops and restaurants. The Village stays open with its own summer programme.
