Caldera Springs or Sunriver: choosing the right family base

Two neighbouring communities that feel quite different once you are staying in them.

The house at Caldera Springs, across from the courts

People searching for a family house in this part of Oregon usually type Sunriver, because it is the name everyone knows. Caldera Springs sits just to the south of it and is a different sort of place.

What Sunriver is good at

Sunriver is larger and busier, with a village of shops and restaurants, a long path network, a marina and a lot going on. If your family wants somewhere with plenty of activity within walking distance, that counts for a great deal.

What Caldera Springs is good at

Caldera Springs is smaller, newer and quieter. It has its own pool complex, its own tennis and pickleball courts, its own gym and nearly nine miles of paths, all inside the community.

For families with young children that containment is the point. Guests tell us repeatedly that they liked being able to send children off on a bike without worrying, and that being across the street from the courts and a short walk from the pool meant they barely used the car.

How far apart are they?

Close. Sunriver Village is about ten minutes by car, so you can have dinner or do the shops there and still be back in a quarter of an hour. Downtown Bend is about twenty-five minutes, and Mt. Bachelor about thirty.

In other words you are not choosing between the two. You are choosing where to sleep, and everything else stays within easy reach.
